There are many ways to measure this statistic. You can look at the AKC Registry to see how many dogs were registered in that year. They release a report every year for the most popular breeds. Another way is to look at Google Trends to see which breeds were searched for the most. Surveys can show the data as well but take a lot of time to generate results. (The folks at Rover took that time).
We decided to take two techniques and combine them. Using the AKC Rankings, we took the top ten breeds and checked the Google Trends data on those search terms over the year. The breeds with the highest average search on Google Trends were ranked the highest.
According to Google Trends, “ A value of 100 is the peak popularity for the term. A value of 50 means that the term is half as popular. A score of 0 means there was not enough data for this term.”
