Description

The Aussiepoo, also known as an Aussiedoodle, is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and Poodle. They can range in size and weight depending which size Australian Shepherd and which size Poodle is used for breeding. Their eye color is most commonly golden brown in color, but can also be dark brown, green, or blue. The Aussiepoo has a defined, strong-boned, and muscular structure covered with a medium length soft, silky coat. It can be straight or wavy and come in a wide variety of colors such as black, blue merle, red merle, white, tan, gray, brown, yellow, silver, and white or a combinations of these colors. Their coat is also low shedding.

Temperament

Being a crossbreed, the Aussiepoo has the combined characteristics of the loyal and active Australian Shepherd and the intelligent, energetic Poodle parents. This makes them very intelligent dogs that can be easily trained and seem to thrive in an environment where they are challenged. Due to this energetic nature, keeping them exercised and busy is critical to keeping them happy; otherwise they might become bored and exhibit destructive behavior.

Ausiepoos are generally family oriented and make a great family pet since they tend to be tolerant with small children and most often get along well with other pets. They have a playful, sweet, and social nature and tend to be friendly with everyone. Despite inheriting the herding instinct of the Australian Shepherd, and due to the Aussiepoo’s very friendly nature with everyone, they do not make a good herding or a watch dog. With their sweet, playful, sociable disposition, they tend to be extremely attached to their owner and would spend time lying at their feet.

Care

With adequate regular exercise (including walking, jogging, and quality playtime) to keep their body and mind stimulated, the Aussiepoo can fit into apartment life. They would also love to swim if given a chance to spend some time at the pool.

Training

The intelligence of the Aussiepoo can make the trainer’s job easier. Pack order training, crate training, socialization training, and reinforcement of rules should be taught to them as puppies to avoid any potentially behavioral issues in adulthood.

History

The Aussiepoo is a designer dog breed developed in the United States by crossing an Australian Shepherd and Poodle in order to produce a puppy that holds desired traits from both breeds. The idea of crossing with the Poodle came about because of their low shedding coat and has gained in popularity; particularly with those who suffer from pet related allergies.
