Overview
The Cavapoo, also known as Cavoodle or Cavadoodle, is a treasured designer hybrid dog created from a Poodle (usually Toy or Miniature) and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This small-to-medium companion dog typically stands between 9–14 inches at the shoulder and weighs around 8–25 pounds, depending on parent genetics. With a soft, curly or wavy coat and gentle expression, Cavapoos often resemble fluffy teddy bears. a look matched by a sweet, affectionate nature.
As a hybrid breed, the Cavapoo is not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) but is recorded by several notable hybrid and designer dog registries, including the American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Dogs Kennel Club, Dog Registry of America, Designer Breed Registry, and the Continental Kennel Club.

History
Cavapoos emerged relatively recently as part of the designer-dog movement of the late 20th century. Breeders aimed to combine the friendly, gentle temperament and small size of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the Poodle’s intelligence and low-shedding, “hypoallergenic” coat. While there is no long historic lineage for the Cavapoo (like with purebred dogs), their popularity skyrocketed among families, first-time owners, and people looking for companion pets well-suited to modern living.
Because the Cavapoo is a hybrid, there’s no single “official” standard for appearance. which means each Cavapoo is somewhat unique, depending on which parent’s genes they inherit more strongly.
Background & Development
Cavapoos can vary in build and coat. Their fur tends to be soft, often wavy or curly, and many consider them low-shedding. a quality many allergy-sensitive owners appreciate (though no dog is truly hypoallergenic). Coat colors range widely: from cream, white, apricot and caramel tones, to richer shades like black or chocolate, sometimes with blends, parti-colors, or subtle markings around face, paws, or chest.
Physically, Cavapoos tend to have a compact but sturdy build, soft floppy ears, a gentle face, expressive eyes, and a friendly silhouette that makes them irresistibly cuddly.
Temperament
Perhaps the biggest draw of Cavapoos is their personality. These dogs are widely regarded as affectionate, gentle, social, and incredibly loyal. They love people (children, adults, seniors), and often bond deeply with their family. They’re usually eager to please thanks to their Poodle heritage, which makes them fairly easy to train using positive reinforcement.
Cavapoos balance playfulness with calmness. They enjoy energetic play sessions, walks, and games, but equally cherish cuddle time, relaxing at home, or snoozing on a lap. Their gentle, friendly nature tends to shine with children, the elderly, and other pets (with proper early socialization). Because they are social creatures, Cavapoos don’t usually thrive when left alone for long stretches; they crave companionship and belonging.
Care & Environment
Cavapoos are comfortable in apartments, city flats, or family homes. Their moderate energy level and affectionate temperament make them well suited to a wide range of living situations. They thrive on companionship and benefit from daily interaction, mental stimulation, and gentle routines. Extended periods alone may increase the risk of separation anxiety. Health-wise, with responsible breeding, balanced diet, and regular vet care, Cavapoos generally enjoy a healthy life of 12–15 years.
Grooming
Cavapoos require regular grooming to maintain a healthy coat. Brushing two to three times per week—more often for curlier coats—helps prevent matting, especially around the ears and legs. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks is commonly recommended. Consistent grooming supports coat health and overall comfort.
