When introduced as puppies and supervised, they are great with kids but can be reserved toward strangers. Schipperkes love their family but are a confident and independent dog with a mind of its own. As a result, they may display a tendency to run out the door without permission or bark too much.
The Schipperke needs a large amount of interaction with people, and as a result, do not do well when left alone for long periods of time. Due to its history of hunting vermin, this breed has a high prey drive for rodents, birds, and reptiles.
Exercise
The Schipperke is an active and vigorous breed. They are very active indoors and are very quick. It is a best to have a fenced yard. Due to their smaller size, Schipperkes can live in an apartment provided they get enough regular exercise. To be content, they need regular exercise such as a daily walk/jog, play time, and a chance to run around.
Training
Since the Schipperke likes to do things its own way, it might not have any reason to do what you say unless you establish yourself as their leader. Be firm and consistent, but not harsh. As with other breeds, you should also begin socializing them as a puppy in order to avoid negative and destructive behaviors later in life.
Grooming
The Schipperke is generally a very clean breed and takes care of its own grooming. To keep the medium length coat looking good, comb and brush it regularly with a firm bristle brush. This breed doesn’t shed very much until the coat “blows out”, which can be up to three times a year.
The Schipperke has a double coat that is straight and slightly harsh to the touch with a soft, dense undercoat. However, the coat should not be silky or too long or too short.
