Needy or Clingy Dog Breeds

Top 10 Needy or Clingy Dog Breeds

Man laying in bed with a dog laying on top of his headDoes your dog sit and watch you in the shower? Does he follow you to the bathroom? If you own a needy pet, you know the drill. Your pooch practically trips you when he walks underneath your feet. But what makes a clingy dog? Read on to learn more about the top 10 needy or clingy dog breeds.

A dog’s companionship is one of life’s greatest experiences, but it’s fascinating to stop and really watch your dog and learn his/her personality. The wonderful thing about most dogs is that they truly really want to hang out with their owners. Some dogs will lay in bed with their owners all day long! But what makes certain dogs breeds needy and more clingy than others?

To Cling or Not to Cling

There are specific breeds of dogs prone to being needy.

Vizsla dog in a grassy field

Vizsla

Some people categorize this breed of dog to be like “Velcro.” The Vizsla dog breed is a pointer and an active hunting dog. You might think all it wants to do is play outside in the great outdoors and stay active all day long, but they actually want nothing more than to hang out with their owner(s). It is their natural instinct to stay close to their owners because, during the hunt, wandering away could be deadly. A wonderful family pet, this dog needs regular, vigorous exercise. Constant human interaction throughout the day and frequent cuddles are a must for this top 10 needy or clingy dog breeds.

French Bulldog puppy sitting on a football

French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is as adorable as it is clingy. Best known as the Frenchie, this breed is known for having a stubborn streak and for craving human attention. The Frenchie nearly demands affection, making it one of the most needy and loving dog breeds. French Bulldogs are very even-tempered and naturally curious and playful, ideal for a single person who has the time to devote all their attention to him and only him. They do not do well when left on their own for long periods of time.

Cute picture of a Chihuahua puppy

Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is the smallest dog in the world; yet ironically, their owners say they have the biggest personalities. This tiny companion is fiercely loyal to its owner and expects to be included in all family activities. They can be jealous too! If you have a Chihuahua you know they are devoted to their owners so much that they can be nippy to strangers or other animals vying for your attention. Though clingy, they are not lazy. The Chihuahua very much likes to stay active.

German Shepherd dog and two of her puppies

German Shepherd

You might be surprised to learn that even a dog the size of a German Shepherd craves the love and attention of its owner(s). This lovely dog breed is super loyal, and this is one reason why they always like to be near their owners. It’s this same quality that makes them great police and/or military dogs. The German Shepherd’s total devotion to its handler, intelligence and trainability aid the dog’s ability to avoid distractions and other things that can deter him from the task at hand. Though large in stature, don’t kid yourself, the German Shepherd dog wants to sit on your lap on the sofa just as much as the next needy pooch.

Pug puppy sitting in grass

Pug

Oh, that face! That flat-faced, overly expressive, wrinkly bug-eyed Pug is another super-clingy yet totally adorable dog. Despite their self-confident approach to life, they are extremely needy. They are also very eager to please their owners in order to secure the attention they crave. The Pug is very tenacious when it comes to having fun and earning the love they so crave from their owners. They are very easy-going and eager to share your affection with other animals and kids.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy sitting on blanket

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a superb lap dog. Their smaller size, kind demeanor and constant desire to snuggle with pretty much anyone who will snuggle back makes them total lovers, though needy! These playful babies with big, beautiful eyes adore having fun and crave constant human affection and are totally devoted to their owners. They are also great with young kids – especially if they’re willing to play. They are ideally suited for families where someone is always home to keep them company.

Italian Greyhound dog standing in grass

Italian Greyhound

This adorable little dog with its slight appearance is headstrong indeed, built for speed too, but is truly a great little family dog that also craves affection. Maybe it’s his tiny size and lightweight coat that has him clamoring to cuddle with his owners to stay warm. Italian Greyhounds bond quickly with their owners but they’re not great in multi-pet families because they tend to want 100% of the attention. Their slight build means bundling up during colder weather is a must and because his stubborn personality can make house training a challenge, walks are important.

Cute little Golden Retriever puppy in a food bowl

Golden Retriever

No surprise that the loveable Golden Retriever is considered a clingy, family dog. It’s his eager-to-please personality and need for praise that makes him so in need of human affection.  They are steadfastly loyal to their humans. Goldens are not made of guard dog material so you won’t find them growling at strangers or barking randomly at strangers. Golden Retrievers are great with kids and other animals and quite frankly they should be involved in all family activities. The Golden is willing to play and retrieve tossed balls for as long as you’re willing to throw them.

Adorable Sheltie Dog

Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie)

Clingy doesn’t always mean hanging off your lap all day long. For some dogs, it just means lots of interaction with their favorite person – you! These mini-Lassies are known for their gentle disposition and amazingly sweet, need-to-please personalities. They clamor for attention 24/7. What makes this need for attention so much fun is that they love to perform for you – from tricks to agility. They like retrieving and herding; they’re up for anything that allows some one-on-one time. Of course, once he’s done, you’re then expected to reward him with praise and attention! But that’s okay because he has just earned it.

A Doberman Pinscher Dog

Doberman Pinscher

Who would think a Dobie could be clingy? My guess is anyone who owns a Doberman. The Doberman is a big, beautiful and powerful dog. It’s also sweet-natured around people and affectionate and devoted to its family. Similar to breeds such as the Chihuahua, a Dobie can become highly loyal to just one owner and crave their attention above all others. This can make him a bit “needy” or clingy because it’s this very human interaction. Dobermans love praise. After a busy day at the dog park, this puppy enjoys nothing more than snuggling on the sofa beside his best buddy…you!
