The Dorkie is a beautiful mix of the Yorkshire Terrier and Dachshund bred as a family pet originally in the 90’s. Though hybrids like this tend to vary, they typically stand about seven inches tall and grow to be no more than 8-10 pounds on average. Like their Dachshund heritage, they typically have big floppy ears, long torsos and short legs. Their tail is medium to long and their hair is typically thick, long and straight, coming in different variations of black, brown and tan. Dorkies are friendly and playful breeds who will love kids and other pets but should be supervised due to their small size.
Dorkies are typically laid back and gentle dogs that will enjoy naps and laps. They enjoy cuddling and being held. One might call this hybrid a bit lazy, but they will also need plenty of activity to thrive. It is recommended that a Dorkie gets at least 30-45 minutes of activity a day. They will love to play and please you, but their laid back nature means they will need a lot of positive reinforcement. Entice them with a game of fetch and reward them with pets and small treats. Be aware that without enough exercise, these dogs can become overweight and/or anxious. With proper attention, these chill pups make great apartment pets because of their small size and laid back attitude.
