Description
Low-set, strong and sturdily built, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi gives an impression of substance in a small space. He is one of the most agreeable small house dogs, as well as an avid competitor in many dog sports, including conformation, herding, and obedience. The Pembroke Corgi is a separate breed from the Cardigan Corgi, possessing a shorter body and straighter, lighter boned legs. His ears are pointed at the tip and stand erect, and he has a short tail. The coat can be red, sable, fawn, black and tan with or without white markings. Discover more about our Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies for sale below!
Disposition
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is intelligent, loyal, and willing to please. Corgis are good with children as long as the dog sees humans as the pack leader. Protective and sturdy, the Corgi makes a decent guard dog and is excellent as a show and obedience dog. Wary of strangers, socialize the Corgi when it is still a puppy. They will sometimes try to herd people by nipping at their heels and should be trained not to do this.
Exercise
The Corgi is a naturally active breed and should get daily walks and play time. The breed will thrive on a farm, but can adapt to a variety of living situations if given regular exercise.
Grooming
Pembroke Welsh Corgis have a soft, medium-length, water-resistant coat that is easy to groom. Simply comb and brush it with a firm bristle brush and bathe only when necessary. Their coat will shed twice a year.
Origin
The Corgi from Pembrokeshire in Wales is a breed of considerable antiquity. The direct ancestors of the Pembroke were brought across the Channel in 1107 by Flemish weavers. The early progenitor is said to have had a resemblance to the old Schipperkes, and sprang from the same family that includes the Keeshond, Pomeranian, Samoyed, Chow Chow, Norwegian Elkhound, and Finnish Spitz.
