Intelligence & Trainability
Papillons are highly intelligent and often excel in obedience and agility. They can learn commands and tricks quickly when training is consistent and enjoyable.
Positive reinforcement using treats, praise, toys, and play can help keep them motivated.
Early training should include:
- Basic obedience
- House training
- Leash manners
- Recall
- Socialization
- Appropriate barking
- Impulse control
Their intelligence means they benefit from regular mental challenges. Puzzle toys, trick training, scent games, and interactive activities can help prevent boredom.
Grooming Requirements
Papillons have a long, fine coat that is relatively easy to maintain compared with many long-haired breeds. Their coat does not typically require extensive trimming.
A grooming routine may include:
- Brushing several times per week
- Bathing as needed
- Regular nail trimming
- Ear cleaning
- Routine dental care
- Checking the feathering around the ears and legs
The long hair around the ears, chest, tail, and legs can collect debris and may occasionally tangle.
Dental hygiene is particularly important for small breeds, so regular tooth brushing and veterinary dental care should be part of their routine.
Papillon Puppies & Children
Papillons can be affectionate and playful family companions, but their small size makes gentle handling essential.
They may be better suited to families with older children who understand how to interact safely with small dogs. Children should be taught not to grab, chase, or roughly handle a Papillon puppy.
Young children should always be supervised around Papillon puppies.
With proper socialization and introductions, Papillons can also learn to live comfortably with other dogs and household pets.
Is a Papillon Puppy Right for You?
A Papillon puppy may be an excellent choice if you’re looking for a dog that is:
- Small and intelligent
- Playful and energetic
- Affectionate and social
- Highly trainable
- Adaptable to smaller homes
- Suitable for dog sports and tricks
Prospective owners should not be misled by the Papillon’s small size. These dogs are active and intelligent and need regular mental stimulation, training, and companionship.
