Havachons have double coats that can be silky, curly dense and both long or short. The most common colors you see their fur includes white, cream, grey, black, brown, silver and blue. They don’t shed their coats much or grow to be bigger than 20 lbs, so they are good for apartments.
These friendly, loving dogs also make wonderful family pets as they get along well with children and other animals. They can be easy to train but also a little stubborn, so it is important to give them positive reinforcement and attention. They love to be the center of attention! These affectionate breeds combined are sure to be loving and loyal. Their kind disposition matches their sweet, expressive faces framed by somewhat long, wavy ears.
Temperament
Havachon puppies are the hypoallergenic hybrid of two adoring breeds. With a cheerful demeanor and playful personality, they make a fun addition to any family as long as they get enough attention! They love to be near their owners and hate to be left alone, often suffering from separation anxiety.
These curious pups can be fairly easy to train and suitable for first-time owners. Like many breeds, it is important to socialize and train a Havachon at an early age to avoid any bad habits from forming.
Though they are small, Havachons require a good deal of exercise in the form of daily walks and/or ball games to make them happy. They are very adaptable so living in a house or apartment will suit them well as long as they get to spend plenty of time with their owners and playing. These intelligent dogs love to please so learning new tricks and training is fun for them. Give them plenty of opportunities to impress and a Havachon will shine.
Grooming
This hypoallergenic breed is great for people who suffer from allergies. Their low shedding coat still requires brushing about two to three times a week to avoid mats. It is also good practice to have their hair trimmed every six weeks or so to keep them nice and pretty.
Make sure to keep up on their dental hygiene and check their nails regularly to see if they need clipping. It is recommended that a Havachon is only bathed when necessary, with a natural shampoo to avoid skin irritation. Check their ears every week for dirt and wipe clean.
Origin
The origin of the Havanese is speculated to come from the Spanish colonists arriving in Cuba on ships during the Cuban revolution. Colonists became so fond of these cute, sturdy little dogs that they kept them as pets and brought them over to America. The American Kennel Club didn’t recognize the Havanese breed until 1996, and they are very popular now.
The Bichon Frise is believed to have descended from water spaniels crossed with small white lap dogs, also brought over by Spanish sailors to Italy where they became cherished lapdogs by both the Italian and French. Prized for its nobility, the Bichon made its way to America in 1995 and became recognized in the Miscellaneous class by American Kennel Club in 1971. Combining these two famously adorable and loving lap dogs has led to one of America’s favorite hybrids: the Havachon.
