It has a muscular build and broad head with wrinkled muzzle, dark eyes, black nose, thick tail, and V-shaped ears that are set high and wide close to the cheeks, giving the head a square-like appearance. The coat is short, dense, and slightly rough and comes in a variety of colors including brindle, fawn, or red, and often with black markings on the head. Disposition

The Bullmastiff is a devoted and alert breed, making them good guard dogs. They also have a good-natured temperament and are affectionate but can be fearless and powerful if provoked. Although unlikely to attack an intruder, they will instead knock them down and hold them in place. Due to its affectionate and good-natured temperament, the Bullmastiff is tolerant of children.

Training

The Bullmastiff is very powerful and needs a consistent and confident owner. Because they grow to be so muscular, they should have obedience training and socialization beginning at a young age. Meek or passive owners will find it hard to control the Bullmastiff.

Exercise

The Bullmastiff will need daily exercise. Some Bullmastiffs are less active than others and will be less active indoors while others are active by nature, but either way, moderate exercise is recommended. A daily walk and playing outdoors are a good way to spend the time, but secure fence is a must for outdoor areas because of their strong build.

Grooming

This breed has as short, easy to care for coat. Simply comb and brush with a firm bristle brush, and shampoo when necessary. Although a seasonal shedder like other dogs, there is little shedding with the Bullmastiff. Also, as with all other breeds, be sure to trim their nails regularly.

Origin

The Bullmastiff has a nickname of “The Gamekeeper’s Night Dog”, because during the mid to late 1800s they were used to guard the country estates and game preserves of the English upper class which were targets of poachers. Gamekeepers crossed Mastiffs with Bulldogs at a ratio of 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog. This new breed was intelligent enough to work on command, able to hold but not maul a poacher, and large enough to frighten away an intruder.
