The Malteagle is a cross between the Maltese and Beagle breeds. It inherits the smooth, silky coat from the Maltese and the color pattern of the Beagle. Its coat can come in black, white, cream, brown and white, and black and white.
The Malteagle is known to be gentle, loving, friendly, and outgoing with an affectionate disposition. They generally get along well with everyone and bond closely with their owner. Being a gentle little toy dog makes it suited to apartment or condo living.
Malteagles crave human love and affection and therefore can become destructive if left alone for long periods of time. Conversely, over pampering it could make it excessively protective of its family. It is a lively and entertaining little pet that will keep you busy with its amusing behavior. It also has a great sense of smell and will follow an interesting trail if it gets the opportunity.
Care and Grooming
Regular, gentle brushing is needed to keep the Malteagle clean and free from matting. Due to its dense fur, it can become dirty easily. Therefore, it has to be bathed frequently to keep its coat smooth and shiny. Wash its facial hair and use lukewarm water to clean its eyes regularly. Ding this will help clear up face and tear stains.
The Malteagle is an active breed, requiring a good amount of daily activity. If you are taking it outdoors for a simple jog or walk, keep it on a leash since it has the tendency of picking up interesting scents and wandering off. Interactive play and plenty of activity is critical to prevent it from getting bored and developing destructive tendencies. Being a small breed, playtime inside a fenced yard is okay.
The Malteagle is a people-oriented breed and responds well to praise, rewards, and play, but it is recommended an experienced person train them as it can have a stubborn streak, which can be corrected with firm and consistent obedience training. Familiarize your pet to being examined and brushed when it is a puppy and crate training by stuffing its crate with chew toys will keep it busy and help prevent separation anxiety.
