Description
The Cavapoo is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle breed; both of which tend to be smart and learn quickly. The Cavapoo always has a sweet expression and a sturdy body, but they need to live in the house though, never outdoors. They have short muzzles, so they can be sensitive to heat. Never leave them outside on a hot day. Cavapoos may have the curly coat of a Poodle or the long, straight coat of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Poodles have a reputation for being hypoallergenic, meaning they can be tolerated by people who have allergies to dogs. Having said that, no dog is 100 percent hypoallergenic, but there are breeds that shed less than others. Because the Cavapoo has Poodle in its heritage, they are sometimes promoted as being hypoallergenic. However, allergies are not caused by any dog coat but by dander, the dead skin cells that are shed by all dogs. Cavapoos shed moderately. It’s a natural process of the hair growth cycle. Regular brushing reduces the amount of hair that sheds. It mostly depends on their health status and breed type.
History
The Cavapoo’s origin is Australia, but people have been breeding certain types of dogs for millennia in the attempt to achieve a certain look, temperament or working ability. That’s how many well-known purebreds, including the Australian Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, Leonberger and more, originally got their start.
Temperament
A Cavapoo’s temperament depends on several things including the temperaments of his parents, the amount of socialization he receives, and the unique genes he inherits. Both Poodles and Cavaliers tend to be friendly and outgoing. Both of the parent breeds are outgoing, loving, and playful. Cavapoos are generally a comfortable size for most homes and adapt well if living in an apartment. They are not necessarily the best watchdogs, because they are likely to greet visitors and intruders alike with a smile. Cavapoos are highly trainable, fun-loving, and can be good playmates for children who are at least six years old. Supervise younger children, though. Even the Cavapoo is sturdy, if the child accidentally falls on or hit the dog, they could hurt him.
Cavapoos have a moderate activity level that is adaptable to their owner’s lifestyle. They need a good walk or active indoor playtime each day. Cavapoos are good at playing fetch and will chase a ball endlessly.
Start training your puppy the day you bring him home. Even at eight weeks, puppies will soak up everything you teach. Don’t wait until he is 6 months old to begin training or you will have a more headstrong dog to deal with. If possible, get him into obedience training by the time he is 10 to 12 weeks old and socialize intently! However, be aware that many puppy training classes require certain vaccines (like kennel cough) to be up to date, and many veterinarians recommend limited exposure to other dogs and public places until puppy vaccines (including rabies, distemper, and parvovirus) have been completed. Begin training your puppy at home and socialize him among family and friends until the puppy vaccines are complete.
Grooming
The Cavapoo puppies requires a lot of grooming, so professional groomers can be helpful sometimes. Dogs whose coats are home brushed regularly are less likely to shed. Clean the ears and eyes often to avoid infections. Don’t skip the seasonal flea treatment too. Occasional dog nail trimming and dog bathing are very important. Check the local pet store for dog grooming supplies and find the best dog shampoo to keep your pet’s coat healthy and to give your Cavapoo a pleasant experience of a dog bath. You don’t want your pet(s) to fear the groomer, bathing, nail trimming or other forms of upkeep or it makes it much harder to perform.
