Intelligence & Trainability
Havanese are intelligent and generally eager to please, making them responsive to positive training. Their playful nature can also make training sessions enjoyable.
Positive reinforcement using treats, praise, toys, and play can encourage good behavior.
Puppy training should include:
- House training
- Basic obedience
- Leash manners
- Recall
- Socialization
- Appropriate barking
- Comfortable handling
Short, fun training sessions can help maintain their attention and reinforce desirable behaviors.
Grooming Requirements
The Havanese has a long, soft coat that requires regular grooming. Depending on the coat length and style, brushing may need to be performed frequently to prevent tangles and mats.
A grooming routine may include:
- Brushing several times per week
- Regular professional grooming
- Bathing as needed
- Nail trimming
- Ear cleaning
- Routine dental care
- Cleaning around the eyes
Some owners choose to keep the Havanese coat trimmed shorter for easier maintenance.
Introducing grooming early can help puppies become comfortable with brushing, bathing, nail trimming, and other handling.
Havanese Puppies & Children
Havanese can be affectionate and playful family companions. Their cheerful personalities often make them enjoyable around children.
Because they are small dogs, puppies should be handled carefully. Children should learn to interact gently and avoid rough play, pulling on the coat, or disturbing the puppy while it is eating or sleeping.
Young children should always be supervised around a Havanese puppy.
With proper socialization, Havanese can also become comfortable living with other dogs and household pets.
